WINTER PARK, Fla. -- A Rollins College student who said she was raped on campus could soon face charges herself.
For about a month, many female students living and going to school at the Rollins College campus have been living in fear. It all started when a female student told campus security and police that two men sexually assaulted her in a bathroom at Cornell Hall.Today, police learned that it was all a lie. When the report surfaced, back in November, it launched an investigation into the allegations. The probe ended up costing police and the FDLE more than $50,000.The Rollins College student body was so moved by the reported incident that it held a candlelight vigil in honor of the women during sexual assault awareness week on campus.Police say they are relieved that the rape did not actually occur, but now they hope to charge this still unnamed student with filing a false police report. They say that they just got the forensic evidence processed from what they call a rape kit. The results of the medical exam indicated that the woman had definitely not been raped. When confronted with that information, investigators say that the woman told truth. Many suspect that the woman made these claims to get attention.Police became suspicious when the woman could not help them with a composite sketch, and after that she said that she didn't want to press charges.Law enforcement continued because it felt obligated to conduct an investigation to ensure the safety of the students on campus.
