ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- There was an unexpected thrill Friday for some thrill seekers at Universal's Islands of Adventure. Some visitors had to be rescued from the Incredible Hulk roller coaster.Thirty-two people were stuck on the ride for about an hour Friday. Fortunately, no one was injured and, better yet, they weren't even stuck upside down.It was a short ride and a long wait for a coaster full of Hulk riders. Super heroes came to the rescue in the form of Orlando firefighters after passengers in the front row were left hanging past an emergency catwalk."So the persons in the front row had nothing that they could have stepped on at that point. That's when they called the Orlando Fire Department," explains Asst. Chief Greg Hoggett, Orlando Fire Department.
The incredible halt happened after a computer glitch put the looping roller coaster into a safety mode. It's designed with three catwalk areas for emergency stops and firefighters have trained on ride for this very situation."We train with Universal personnel on how that ride operated, how to get to the ride and how to get to the people in the middle of the ride," explains Hoggett.Riders may have been a little green from the experience, but none the worse for wear.Meanwhile, Universal technicians took a couple of hours to check over the popular ride to make sure it was safe to unleash its muscle again. Around 2:30 Friday afternoon, Universal decided it was only a computer glitch. They fixed it and put the Hulk back into service.
