Central Florida Neighborhood Fights Off Proposed Wal-Mart Store

Posted: 5:35 pm EDT May 23, 2005Updated: 6:11 pm EDT May 23, 2005

They took on a corporate giant, and people who live in a Titusville neighborhood won. Wal-Mart won't be coming to their neighborhood.

Hundreds of people, who live near State Road 405, just west of I-95, said the store would bring crime, and the extra traffic would put their children's lives in danger.

The yearlong battle over the lot is over. The giant retailer, Wal-Mart, wanted to build a super center right across the street from an elementary school. But two stay-at-home moms have defeated the giant.

The two were Titusville's 'desperate housewives,' desperate to keep Wal-Mart from building a super center on a 30-acre wooded lot; but their desperation is now gone.

"It is near our home. It would impact our quality of life and it really mattered to stand up and do something," said Lisa Smith.

Smith and Arlynn Baker led the fight to stop Wal-Mart, after learning the retailer would draw an additional 15,000 cars past the front of an elementary school. Then they learned putting a parking lot there could plug the natural replenishment of ground water and cause wells to run dry.

"We don't have enough now and it doesn't make good sense to destroy what you do," said Baker.

A spokesperson for Wal-Mart said they listened to the community and decided to look for another location but have not said where.

Neighbors say it was relief to hear they have bagged the plans, but say it's still important to protect the site so Titusville's drinking water is not jeopardized.

Now state legislator Bob Allen plans to ask the state legislature to purchase and preserve the property.

The housewives say, when they started the fight, people told them they couldn't win. They are glad they didn't listen.

"At least I know my children are going to be safer in my neighborhood. I know that my neighbors are going to have water to drink," said Smith.

Because of the water issues, Wal-Mart could have faced legal issues down the road.

The two housewives also said, despite their victory, they are not ready to shop at Wal-Mart again.
