ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Seminole County sex offender is trying to start a nationwide movement to outlaw sex offender websites and to do away with the 1,000-foot buffer zones near schools.
The Sex Offender Network has caught the attention of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for flyers being mailed to Central Florida sex offenders asking for $48. In exchange, they would get an annual membership in the club and to be entered in a class action lawsuit to restore their anonymity. The network said it has 98,000 members. But even convicted sex offenders find the letters suspicious and have brought it to the attention of investigators. The idea was brought on by Demetrius Jones, a registered sex offender from Orlando who said the company is not a scam.
