Principal Responds To Allegations That Teacher Is Racist

Thursday, August 18, 2005 – updated: 5:06 pm EDT August 18, 2005

An Orange County principal is reacting to allegations that one of her teachers wrote a letter full of racist comments that were published in a newspaper.

Jan Hall
Jan Hall is a fifth grade teacher at Sadler Elementary School. Students and their family members are upset that she allegedly wrote derogatory remarks about Hispanics, Mexicans and Haitians.

One of Hall's fifth grade students said he wouldn't be surprised if she were responsible for that racist diatribe.

Eleven-year-old Jonathan Ruiz is of Colombian descent and, last Friday, in Jan Hall's fifth grade class at Sadler Elementary School, he said she made a series of stunning generalizations.

"We were doing social studies and she brung up the subjects of countries of South America and North America and she just said, 'Puerto Ricans sell drugs and people from Colombia bring drugs, too.' That's it, and then I got mad," Ruiz said.

It was yet another allegation of racism against the veteran teacher at a heavily Latino school.

"There's no room for racism and discrimination and there is no room for not being sensitive to the needs of all students," said Principal Anne Lynaugh, Sadler Elementary School.

The accusations came to light in a Spanish language newspaper, which printed a translation of a letter Hall allegedly wrote to a member of Congress, saying of Mexicans, "They bring drugs and incurable diseases to Florida," of Puerto Ricans, "Please change the laws so these people don't come here," and of Haitians, "Their improper conduct is a serious problem."

Principal Lynaugh said she never saw it coming.

"She's been a caring professional," Lynaugh said.

Hall has admitted to writing a letter to Congress, but it was unclear if the letter printed in the paper was truly her work.

Until the school district finds out for sure, Hall has been pulled from the classroom.

In this minority community, outraged parents hope she never comes back.

"I wouldn't want my daughter in her class. She's obviously a racist. She wouldn't want the best for my child," said parent Yamille Ramirez.

Hall has been suspended without pay until the situation is fully investigated.
