Latino Group Makes Offer To Teacher Accused Of Racism

READ: Portions Of Letter Teacher Is Accused Of Writing

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Hispanic community reacted Monday morning to charges that an Orange County elementary school teacher wrote a letter some people consider racist.

Jan Hall
Jan Hall is a fifth grade teacher at Sadler Elementary School, who is on unpaid leave. Students and their family members are upset. They believe she wrote derogatory remarks about Hispanics and Haitians.

Monday, an organization called Latino Leadership came up with an interesting offer for Hall. The group is offering Hall a free trip to Puerto Rico to learn about the culture that she allegedly wrote derogatory remarks about in a letter.

"We, as a community, are going to let everyone know that we have a lot of love to give," said Maritza Sanz, CEO of Latino Leadership.

Sanz wants to educate Hall after the controversy surrounding a letter printed in the Spanish newspaper El Nuevo Dia with her name on it. The letter talked about Mexicans and said they bring drugs and incurable diseases in Florida, suggested laws be changed so Puerto Ricans don't come to Florida and stay in Puerto Rico, and that Haitians' improper conduct is a serious problem.

The comments angered the minority community in Central Florida, not because Hall expressed her right to free speech but because Hall is an elementary school teacher in a predominantly minority community.

Parents feel Hall, as a teacher with a master's degree, should be more open to other cultures. Sanz wants to use this as a way to teach tolerance and acceptance.

"This is going to give us a very good opportunity for our community to educate ourselves," Sanz said.

Hall will be receiving a formal letter inviting her on that trip to Puerto Rico.
