READ:Portions Of Letter Teacher Is Accused Of WritingORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The controversy continues to boil over an Orange County teacher accused of writing a racist letter. Tuesday, the school board could vote to formally suspend the teacher without pay.
Jan Hall
The president of the teacher's union, David Demond, said the decision to suspend Jan Hall was a rush to judgment. As of Tuesday, the elementary school teacher hasn't confirmed or denied she wrote the racist letter.
"Right now, it's so one sided, she's tried, convicted and guilty," said Demond.Demond wants school superintendent Ron Blocker to reconsider officially suspending Hall. The Sadler Elementary School teacher was immediately suspended when a racist letter she allegedly wrote was printed in a Spanish-language newspaper. The letter talked about Mexicans and said they bring drugs and incurable diseases to Florida. The author wanted Puerto Ricans to stay out of the country. The letter also targeted Haitians and people from the Middle East.Monday night, the school board said it was getting a list of Hall's students, their ethnic background and grades to see if there was any bias in Hall's grading. And, although the letter was written to a congressman, no congressman has said they ever received it.If the board approves the decision to suspend Hall without pay, the question remains whether it begins at that time or if it is retroactive as of last Wednesday when the letter surfaced.
