Katrina Disaster Leads To Gas Shortages In Central Florida

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 – updated: 4:35 pm EDT August 31, 2005

PUMP PATROL: Where Have You Found Cheap Gas?

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The effects of Katrina have reached Central Florida in the form of gas shortages. State leaders were calling for a calm at the pumps, but it's hard when you see the price rise. Premium gas was already over three-dollar mark Wednesday and regular gas could follow suite in the coming days.

Gas prices around Central Florida on Wednesday were doing one of two things, disappearing or inflating to head-turning prices.

Already the prospect of price increases and fears of a shortage was causing some stations to run out of certain grades of gas, mainly regular unleaded. It was angering some, while others, like Chris Sadlo, took it in stride.

"I probably fill up three times a week and it's just part of what you've got to do," Sadlo said.

The one-day, 20-cent jump at the pump was due to a major decrease in oil production in the Gulf due to Hurricane Katrina. For Central Florida, that means oil supplies from Tampa to a pipeline in Taft are running low.

Taft is where Central Florida suppliers pick up their shipments and deliver it to your neighborhood gas stations, gas stations that saw limited or cancelled deliveries all day on Wednesday while all drivers saw were prices that had no where to go but up.
