Former Magic TV Analyst Takes The Stand In His Own Defense

Posted: 5:26 pm EDT September 8, 2005

Former Orlando Magic TV analyst Jack Givens took the stand in his own defense Thursday afternoon. He's accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl, who is now 15, after a private basketball lesson at her home.

Givens absolutely denied all of the sexual allegations against him and he tried his best to offer explanations for each of his actions, and the jurors got to hear it in his own words.

"I absolutely did not do what she is accusing me of doing," Givens told the court Thursday.

No stranger to performing under pressure, Givens made what was arguably the most difficult public appearance of his life. Answering to a girl's allegations that he fondled her in a swimming pool and her bedroom after a private basketball lesson.

"I didn't know what to think about that. I was totally shocked. I was caught off guard, quite frankly, with the accusations," Givens said.

Prosecutors grilled him about what he called a friendship with the youngster, who was trying to make it onto a basketball team he coached, and why was alone in a swimming pool with her.

"I said, 'Yeah, that would feel good, it would give me a chance to cool off before my next meeting,'" Givens said.

But the victim's grandmother did not think it was okay, even calling the girl's mother while it was happening.

"It seemed as if he was right up against her, closer than he should have been," the victim's grandmother said.

And that came after changing clothes in her bathroom.

Given tried to explain computer instant messages seized from his home, in which he and the victim discuss the incident and he appears to apologize. He said he thought she was upset about her basketball shot. Givens made only one admission.

"All of this was absolutely bad judgment on my part," Givens said.

Several other defense witnesses also took the stand, including a basketball photographer who implied the victim might have been out to get Givens.

The jury could get the case as early as Friday.
