ORLANDO, Fla. -- Late Friday morning, the defense rested its case in the trial against a former television announcer for the Orlando Magic. Jack Givens is accused of molesting a young girl after a private basketball lesson at her home last year. The teenager was 14 years old at the time. She said Givens attacked her. She was examined five days later after discussions with her mother and eventually with her father once he got back to town.
Most of Friday morning's testimony focused on the age of the teenager's injury, which meant the jury spent most of the morning looking at graphic photographs of the teenager's examination. Givens appeared to be uncomfortable looking at them.Defense witness Dr. William Anderson, who is a pathologist, testified that after looking at those photographs he didn't believe the teenager's injury was five days old."A day, 24 hours, maybe 48 hours at the longest. But, no, it does not appear to me to be five days in age," Anderson said.Anderson said he based that opinion on what he sees as obvious signs of healing and a lack of swelling. The prosecution pointed out that it would be difficult to see swelling in a two-dimensional photograph.Givens testified Thursday that the only thing he's guilty of is bad judgment, but the teenager insisted that Givens repeatedly got inappropriately close to her so that he could have sexual contact.
