Hurricane Rita Blamed For Capsizing Fishing Boat In Brevard

Posted: 12:19 pm EDT September 20, 2005

Hurricane Rita was responsible for capsizing a fishing boat in Brevard County on Tuesday morning, leaving two fishermen in fear for their lives.

An officer from the Fish and Wildlife Commission just happened to be in the area and was able to help rescue the two men.

The fishermen said they were trapping crabs in the Banana River when the boat overturned. One was caught underneath the boat for a time and had to kick off his boots and heavy fishing gear to get to the surface.

They said the wind just picked up and the weight of the traps sent them over.

Both fishermen hung on to the hull of the boat until they were rescued. One said he didn't think he was going to make it. He was not wearing a life vest.
