ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- It was a long and busy night for many Central Florida gas stations. Hurricane victims are driving for hours to find enough gas to fill up their cars.Thursday should be another busy day at the Turkey Lake Service Plaza on the Florida Turnpike after Wednesday’s flood of south Floridians who were not going Wilma's way.The exodus from Hurricane Wilma has now made it to Orange County. The lack of gas, food and ice is pushing south Floridians to Central Florida. The lines are punishing, stretching for miles at nearly every rest station on the Turnpike."Every station has been horrible, all the way down the turnpike, really bad," said one evacuee. In Palm Beach, frustration boiled over at one gas station. People arrived with whatever containers they could find to fill up on fuel. But when the county curfew went into effect at 7pm, police shut the place down. Some of the hurricane victims found their alternative, though. They hit the road, winding up in Central Florida, where there's power, no curfew and all the creature comforts Wilma snatched away.In fact, many evacuees are staying in the Orlando-area, as they ride out the recovery process away from home. Many have been told it'll be weeks before they get their power back. Because of that, hotels in the area are filling up as frustrated south Floridians continue their exodus up north.
