Teen Attacked By Shark Off New Smyrna Beach Coast

Monday, November 21, 2005

A shark attacked a surfer in New Smyrna Beach, but the Winter Springs teen is at home recovering.

Kevin Spradlin's wounds will take about two weeks to heal, all bite marks from a shark. The 17-year-old said he was surfing near the inlet Sunday, just a few feet from the shore when the shark attacked.

"I never even saw it coming at all and my friend Robby, when he saw it, said it had to have been a six to seven foot shark," Spradlin said.

Volusia County Beach Patrol said it was caused by the rough and turbulent surf. They said the sharks can't see clearly, bump into people, and bite out of instinct, then quickly let go.

This was the third shark attack off the Central Florida coast in less than a month.
