Man Struck By Vehicles After Jumping From Overpass

Posted: 9:09 am EST January 16, 2006Updated: 4:23 pm EST January 16, 2006

Police said they may never know how many cars hit a body on I-4 during rush hour Monday morning after a man jumped from an overpass. The resulting investigation shut down several lanes of I-4 westbound, as thousands gawked at the disturbing scene.

It was still dark as the morning rush picked up speed, bringing several lives together as another life came to an end.

"Kinda got me sick there for a while. Couple other people getting sick, too," said eyewitness Danny Bower.

Bower was among the unwitting accomplices to the gruesome suicide of Longwood man.

"The folks that I've spoken with myself, they hold their head down. They're just trying to realize and understand what happened. Clearly, their lives will be impacted for quite some time," said Commander Steve Bracknell, Lake Mary Police Department.

Police said the man slit his wrists at home, but that didn't work. He then got into his car and parked it on Lake Mary Boulevard, just short of an overpass above I-4. He then walked the rest of the way up to the overpass, where he used his palms to pull himself up on the barricade and threw himself over the edge.

"Cars were swerving and hitting something in the road," said one eyewitness.

"It lifted the rear end of my truck right off the ground," another witness said.

Police said they may never know how many people hit the body. The resulting carnage was so unrecognizable, many motorists simply may not have known what they hit.

In one case, a driver made it all the way to Poinciana before finding blood on his car.

Police said the man was 45 years old and left behind a wife and child. He did leave a note, but it shed little light as to why he killed himself.
