ORLANDO, Fla. -- A sewage spill is causing traffic problems in Orlando at Sand Lake Road and all of the surrounding restaurants and businesses are out big bucks. The broken pipe was fixed Friday afternoon, but the project won't be completed until Friday night. The exact location of the sewer line rupture is in the middle of Sand Lake Road between Turkey Lake Road and Doctor Phillips. More than a dozen people are working as fast as they can to dig out and replace a water main that snapped 10 feet under ground. The pipe broke and sent 100,000 gallons of sewer waste water over Sand Lake Road. Crews shut down the westbound lanes and left only one lane of traffic in each direction
The sewer water not only affected traffic, but also may have contaminated Little Sand Lake. As a precaution, a fish and swim warning is now in effect and the water will have to be tested. "In the warmer weather, you tend to have higher bacteria numbers in the lake, but this time of year it’s a little more safer," said Chris Schroettinger, Environmental Protection Division.Safety is a priority with the road repairs as well as finishing the job quickly. The goal is to have the pipe replaced by 8pm and put down temporary asphalt to open up the lanes.Officials are estimating the cost of repair at $20,000.The pipe manufacturer could be at fault for the five-year-old pipe that cracked, but should have lasted 50 years. The county is meeting with the manufacturer next week. But the problem could have started when the pipe was installed. Orange County hires an outside company to do that work. If it turns out to be a problem with the installation, the county will talk to the contractors who did the work.Either way, whatever doesn't get paid will come out of the county's funds.
