Monday, February 13, 2006
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Transcripts released Monday reveal more information on the deadly beating of a homeless man in Holly Hill. The documents show the four teenage suspects tried to blame everyone but themselves. The gag order has now been lifted and the state attorney has released the transcripts of the interrogations of the four defendants. Justin Stearns, Christopher Scamahorn, Jeffrey Spurgeon, and Warren Messner have all pled guilty to last year's beating death.Another teen, Phi Huynh, is also charged with aggravated assault. The massive amount of paperwork released Monday includes, word-for-word, what the suspects were telling investigators just days after the murder. The suspects each had their own story to tell. and each one said, 'I didn't do it.'
The truth seemed to be hard to come by. Even though Christopher Scamahorn's mother begged him not to lie, investigators were clearly frustrated. In interviews with investigators, all four suspects agree they went into the woods to hang out at a tree fort. That's where they met the homeless man. Where they don't agree is who did what to Michael Roberts.Spurgeon said the man was dead before he got there. Justin Stearns blamed Christopher Scamahorn. Scamahorn said the blood on his shoes was only red paint. Messner said he never laid a hand on the man.But investigators knew better. One told Scamahorn he was up to his eyeballs in trouble. Investigator White asked Stearns if he had a temper problem. Stearns said he did. After hours of expert questioning, the truth started to come out little by little. For some of the boys, that meant the consequences of what they did began to set in.In one instance, Investigator Horzepa tells Justin Stearns he could spend life in prison. Stearns says, "Hopefully, I'll die in there."In some cases, the kids realized their peril before their parents. After hearing her son talk to investigators about his role in the fatal beating, Darlene DeCarlo, Chris Scamahorn's mom says, "I don't want you hanging out with those kids anymore."All four teens did eventually plead guilty to the beatings. They will be sentenced in April, most likely to life in prison.
