Fertilizer Truck Overturns, Forcing I-95 Closure

Thursday, March 2, 2006 – updated: 1:04 pm EST March 2, 2006

A backup on I-95 stretched for 20 miles Thursday morning after a fertilizer truck crashed in Indian River County. The crash led to congestion, backups, and detours all through Brevard County all morning long.

I-95 reopened around noon Thursday and traffic was moving again. At one point, the crash blocked all southbound lanes on I-95 in Fellsmere, just south of the Indian River county line. The backup stretched to Melbourne.

It was a traffic nightmare for south Brevard County or anyone trying to get through Brevard and Indian River counties Friday morning. It was the result of a messy crash in Fellsmere.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said an 18-wheeler hauling a load of fertilizer lost control and overturned, dumping the load of fertilizer all over the two southbound lanes. Troopers said it took a couple of hours to get the truck back upright and get in some heavy machinery to clean up the roadway to allow other cars to get by.

Throw into the mix that the wreck was in an area where there are very few on ramps and off ramps. So traffic had to be diverted over to U.S.-1 in Palm Bay and down into Sebastian to get around the mess before vehicles were allowed back on to the interstate.
