City Without Police Chief After Council Votes To Fire Him

Posted: 7:36 am EST March 21, 2006

The city of Oak Hill is without a police chief. Late Monday night, the city council voted to fire its top cop.

In a 3-2 vote, the council ousted Chief Walter Zalisko. His firing came amid charges of abuse of power by former officers in the small Volusia County department.

It was a heated meeting, but at the end the mayor stood by his dismissed chief.

"I believe he is a man of integrity and I’m sad to see him go," said Mayor Mike Thompson.

The city will continue to pay Zalisko for the next six months, because he's under contract. Zalisko said he will file a lawsuit against the city.
