When students at DeLand High School get into trouble, they have to see the assistant principal in charge of discipline. According to charging paperwork, a trip to Tinsley's office could get you much more than detention.

Tyrone Tinsley's family appears to be standing behind him as he faces two felony charges, calling the charges lies. The case concerns his conduct at DeLand High School two years ago.

According to prosecutors, when a student spoke to Tinsley about a bad break up, he asked her "if she ever taped herself having sex with her boyfriend" and told her to try it "so he could watch the tape."

Prosecutor also wrote that he asked that same teen and another girl "if they would get together with each other."

Tinsley has taught at DeLand since 1981. He's been an assistant principal for the past ten years. He was moved to the district office when an allegation surfaced in November 2004.

A third student claimed he asked her about oral sex.

The sheriff's office recommended charges. The State Attorney's Office did not end up filing on that case, but their investigation led to the charges filed Monday.

Tinsley is still on the Volusia County payroll. In fact, taxpayers will keep paying him at least until the criminal charges are resolved.

Prosecutors first received case work from the sheriff's office in February 2005, 15 months ago. A spokesperson for the State Attorney's Office said the investigation took so long, because they had a difficult time locating witnesses.
