TV Set Falls On 4-Year-Old Boy, Killing Him

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 – updated: 6:43 am EDT June 21, 2006

A grief stricken father learned late Tuesday afternoon that his 4-year-old son was dead after a television fell on top of him. Orange County deputies said it appeared to be a horrible accident.

Kevin Flores, 4, was at his home with a sibling and an adult family friend.

"It's just a shame that things like this do happen, but unfortunately they do happen," said Detective Yuri Melich, Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives said Flores was in the front bedroom of the house on Wechsler Circle. He was watching TV with his 12-year-old sister. An adult family friend babysitting the kids was in another part of the house.

"The older child decided to use the bathroom and, unfortunately, that's when the younger one got up and decided to go to the television set," Melich explained.

When the girl returned from the bathroom, Flores was stuck underneath the heavy, 40-inch Panasonic TV.

The family moved to the area from New York State just over a month ago, making a new living in a new state, only to find themselves in the midst of a tragedy.

"Accidents can happen at any time. Kids can move real quick. Keep them in eyesight, really close. This family was doing everything that they could," Melich said.

Because of that, detectives said they don't plan to file any charges in the case. They said, explicitly, there was no evidence of abuse or neglect.
