Major Roads Shut Down When Grenades Found Along Street

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 – updated: 5:08 pm EDT June 20, 2006

Melbourne police shut down two major roads after several dummy grenades were found Tuesday morning by construction workers near the corner of John Rhodes Boulevard and Eau Gallie.

The grenades were 40-millimeter practice rounds for a military grenade launcher. Not knowing whether they were live ammo, the police called in the Brevard County Bomb Squad for help.

It turned out they were dummy rounds and did not have an explosive charge in them.

"There are a lot of other 40-millimeter projectile rounds that look very similar to this one that are extremely dangerous. So if you see anything like this, do not touch it," said Dep. Mike Biecker, Brevard County Sheriff's Bomb Squad.

The bomb squad confiscated the rounds. Authorities were trying to determine who left the grenades on the side of the road.
