Police Union Wants Apology For "White Boy" Comment

Wednesday, June 21, 2006 – updated: 12:58 pm EDT June 21, 2006

Orlando's police union wants a public apology from a city commissioner for calling an officer a "white boy." The incident started when an officer pulled over Commissioner Daisy Lynum's son.

Juan Lynum said he was targeted because he's black. He called his mother twice during the traffic stop. Commissioner Lynum then called the police chief.

The union believes Commissioner Lynum used her elected position to try to get rid of her son's ticket. Now, the union is asking for a public apology for a comment the commissioner made to a newspaper reporter.

"Orlando police officers are justifiably angered by the comment, 'I just didn't want a white boy shooting my son or tasing him,'" said police union president Jeff Williams.

The police union claimed the officer pulled over Juan Lynum because of a broken headlight.

The police department was conducting an internal investigation.
