ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando police investigators said Deputy Michael Callin was standing on the I-4 ramp when he was hit. The driver who hit him Tuesday on I-4 near Universal Boulevard took off, but investigators arrested Allan Barahona overnight.Barahona, 19, was arrested for attempted murder, which would indicate Orlando police believe he did not try to avoid hitting the deputy, or worse.Police were not yet releasing their initial investigative report, but said the deputy was standing on the ramp and was standing under an overpass in the shade and possibly in the shadow, but was wearing a white shirt that would be fairly visible.Channel 9 asked Barahona if he did what he's accused of, but his only response was to shake his head no. Eyewitness News checked into Barahona's driving record. Court records show his license is suspended. He's had 14 violations over the last two years for driving without a license, for not paying tickets and for not showing up in court.Orlando police said Orange County Deputy Michael Callin caught Barahona speeding on the I-4 west onramp at Kirkman Road. When he stepped onto the ramp to get Barahona to pull over, Barahona hit him and kept driving, eventually ditching the car and running.
The sheriff's office has jurisdiction in Orlando since it's in the county, and a spokesman said deputies routinely patrol trouble spots in the city for enforcement. Police homicide investigators were working the case and were not releasing the report until they gather more information.Meanwhile, Deputy Callin was still at Orlando Regional Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon after undergoing surgeries. An Orange County sheriff's spokesman confirmed Callin was in serious condition. Eyewitness News also learned that part of his right leg had to be amputated overnight. One by one, through the morning, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office made their way to ORMC. They were headed up to the fourth floor intensive care unit where Deputy Callin was recovering from two surgeries. The 26-year-old suffered injuries to his head and right leg in Tuesday's hit and run. Overnight, Deputy Callin's wife, parents, his sister and a few close colleagues stayed close by him.Callin joined the 18-person motorcycle traffic enforcement unit full time just three months ago. Immediately before that, he had worked the Orange County area around the attractions.Callin grew up in Oviedo and has been a sheriff's deputy for exactly four years. His father's an Orange County detective and his sister is training at the police academy.
