There was anger and tears Wednesday night from Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary after one of his deputies, who was run down Tuesday by a teenage driver, died. Callin, 26, died at 7:25pm. He was surrounded by his family Wednesday night when they made the heart-wrenching decision to take him off life support after his brain began to swell. At sheriff's office headquarters, flags were lowered to half staff after Deputy Michael Callin lost his fight for life, his injuries too severe after Tuesday's alleged hit and run."I'm tired of hurting and my heart is hurting," Beary said Wednesday night. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon on an I-4 onramp near Universal. Callin and other motorcycle deputies were running radar and he tried to stop a car, but detectives said 19-year-old Allan Barahona didn't want to stop, plowing into Callin and running away on foot.Investigators were looking into whether Barahona was in the country illegally. The sheriff was calling for reform."The bottom line is simple. If they're illegal, we've gotta change the way we're doing business, 'cause right now it's bull crap," Beary said.
Callin was actually conscious when he arrived at the hospital, but uncontrollable bleeding from an artery forced doctors to amputate part of his leg and pump 60 liters of fluids into his body. But when his brain started to swell Wednesday morning, there was nothing they could do."It's a very grave situation and it ended up in him passing," Beary said.Beary said as many as 300 deputies were in the hospital when he died."They're all iron jawed, but you can see some tears flowing," Beary said. "We have to put this uniform on the next day. We got a job to do and I ask 'em to look over each other's back."Callin is a second-generation deputy. His father is a detective and his sister is in the police academy. Wednesday night, he became the 13th Orange County deputy killed in the line of duty since 1845.The county is planning an official law enforcement officer's funeral, but final arrangements were still being worked out.Deputy Callin's colleagues are honoring him by holding a blood drive Thursday. Doctors used dozens of units of blood to try to save him, which put another strain on the blood supply. The blood drive will go from nine o'clock Thursday morning until 3:00pm at Orlando City Hall on Orange Avenue.Barahona was charged with attempted murder of a law-enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and resisting an officer without violence. Charges could be upgraded to include murder.
