Scam Artists Targeting Older Latino Women In Seminole County

Posted: 5:45 pm EDT August 3, 2006

A couple of scam artists seem to be targeting older Latino women in Seminole County. An 87-year-old woman said she was taken advantage of and now her life savings were gone.

In her 87 years, Anita Ribot has always found the time to help those in need, a trait that has only grown with age. Just ask her daughter.

"When you get older, you just want to help everybody," said Raquell Castillo Veitia, the victim's daughter.

Earlier this week, when Ribot was walking home from shopping, she saw an opportunity to help. A man and a young lady needed medical attention.

"I have a pain in my stomach, I'm sick. I have a sick lady," Ribot explained.

She got in the car with the couple, hoping to help guide them to a doctor, but then the story changed. The people were not sick, Ribot said, they needed money.

"They need some money to give us that money," Ribot explained.

The couple said they won the lottery, but needed money to file the paperwork. That's where Ribot came in. They took her to her bank, a Washington Mutual, and told her to withdraw $1,400, almost the entire contents of her saving account, promising her $50,000 when they got the jackpot.

Ribot complied. The thieves took the money, took Ribot home and took off. That's when she figured it out.

"I said, Oh, my God, Anita, what you doing?" she said.

It turned out, Ribot's good friend Alejandrina Lugo may have met the same people last month. They came to her and asked for money. She said she didn't talk about it then because she was scared.

"He say, how much money you have here," Lugo said.

She said she never gave them any money, but she knows the couple will keep trying until they are stopped.

The elderly woman described the couple. The man is 6-foot-2 with a large build, approximately 35 years old. The woman has dark skin, is less than five feet tall and around 22 years old.

If you have any information about the two, call the Seminole County Sheriff's Department.
