Squirrel Caught, Killed After Attacks In Winter Park

Posted: 4:47 pm EDT August 9, 2006Updated: 5:49 pm EDT August 9, 2006

A squirrel attacked several people in Winter Park before it was finally caught and killed. There's concern for the people who may have been exposed to rabies.

Most people would agree, offering the cute critters a peanut doesn't seem like a risky thing to do. But a police report said a violent squirrel scratched and bit a woman on the leg the evening of August 2.

As police responded, the animal aggressively went after a second woman and an officer. Two days later, a 3-year-old boy was bitten on the leg.

Animal Control officers set up cages this week. But, in the end, it was city workers who trapped the sick animal, ending the seven-day rampage.

"We started trying to capture it. It was eluding us to some effect. We eventually surrounded it and caught it with a litter stick that we grabbed it with," explained Parks Director John Holland.

After the initial attacks, the city's parks and recreation department took the unusual step of putting up notices warning of the aggressive squirrel and warning people not to approach any squirrels in the area.

"If people stopped feeding them by hand and put the food somewhere. If you really want to feed them and you want to watch the squirrels, you can do it from afar. You don't have to do it up close," said resident Tammy Krivanek.

Rabies tests on the caught squirrel are due back in a few days. Nonetheless, the 3-year-old boy who was bitten is undergoing a month-long series of injections just in case.

The Centers for Disease Control said there hasn't been a recorded case of squirrel to human rabies in many, many years.
