Leesburg Police Abandon Search Site For Missing Child

Friday, September 8, 2006 – updated: 1:14 pm EDT September 12, 2006

Leesburg police called off the latest search for 2-year-old Trenton Duckett on Monday night. Investigators searched until after 11:00pm at a new development near the Turnpike and US-27, but there was no sign of the boy.

It's been more than two weeks since Duckett was reported missing by his mother who has since committed suicide. Leesburg police held up a ray of hope to a grieving community Monday night. They called in Lake County's crime scene unit to dig in an undeveloped tract of land. As night fell, cadaver dogs focused on a single spot, not more than 22 feet long and ten feet wide.

"The dogs showed an interest," said Sgt. Christi Mysinger of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. "At no time did we get an actual alert from the dogs, but they did show enough interest that we did want to continue to effort."

Earlier, Leesburg police had said it was just a routine lead, one of half a dozen reported sightings of little Trenton Duckett and his mother, Melinda, in the days before he disappeared.

"At this time we are confident we have exhausted all measures at this location," Mysinger said.

More than two weeks ago, Trenton vanished from his Leesburg apartment. Then, last Friday, his mother, Melinda, took her own life, further confusing an already emotional case for searchers and the family.

"Of course we keep our hopes up to find this child alive, that is our goal," added Mysinger. "Anytime you have something like this, you want closure."

Police said no one can confirm seeing Trenton after about five o'clock on Saturday, August 26 and that's a good 26 hours before his mother reported the kidnapping. Police have checked store surveillance tapes and phone records, but they won't confirm what they've found.
