Police Searching For Assault Rifle Stolen From Cruiser

Monday, September 18, 2006 – updated: 12:30 pm EDT September 18, 2006

Orlando police officers are out searching for their own gun.

A brazen burglar broke into an officer's patrol car and got away with a high powered, and highly accurate, police rifle. The officer's family first noticed the theft when they saw a window smashed out in the police cruiser.

The cruiser was parked at the officer's home off Regis Court in Pine Hills. That's where detectives were searching for the burglar who now has a dangerous weapon.

The gun isn't your usual hunting rifle. It is a very specialized weapon given only to law enforcement and it is not sold in stores, but can fetch a big profit on the black market.

The police cruiser was parked outside an officer's home. Sometime Sunday night, someone came by and broke the window. They then tampered with the device that locks the rifle in the car and were able to get the weapon out.

Police dusted the car for fingerprints and were using dogs to search the neighborhood to try and get a trail of where the suspects went.

The rifle is an AR-15. It has markings on it that show that's only for law enforcement use, so it can't be pawned or sold.

Police want anyone who sees this weapon to contact them. They aren't yet releasing the name of the officer, but police said this is the second time she's been hit by burglars.

Her home was recently broken into, but those suspects were caught.
