DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Someone has finally solved the mystery of the tiny shards that have been washing ashore in Daytona Beach for the past two weeks. Some folks thought they were fiberglass. Others thought they looked like jellyfish eggs. The little shards began washing ashore when offshore hurricanes churned up big waves in Volusia County.A marine lab finally determined that the little creatures are pteropods, commonly known as "sea butterflies." The pteropods are not dangerous and have been washing away from the beaches now that the surf has calmed.
