Health Department Finds Dozens Of Violations At Mobile Home Park

Posted: 6:20 pm EDT September 28, 2006Updated: 6:23 pm EDT September 28, 2006

Channel 9's cameras were rolling Thursday while the Health Department discovered dozens of violations while inspecting just one mobile home park. The park, located near Orange Blossom Trail and Kaley, is one of 144 mobile home parks in Orange County that the Health Department regularly inspects.

Thursday, a random check has the attention of several Orange County agencies. Eyewitness News' tour of The Palms was a real eye opener.

Health inspectors said that no one should have to live surrounded by garbage, human waste, and rodents.

It costs $125 a week for a roof over your head. It's not ideal, but for residents of The Palms trailer park, there's no other option.

"When it rains, we got water coming through our air conditioner," said resident Ashley Mitchell.

Human waste, instead of going in the sewer, sits in a pile underneath the place.

"No one should be living in the conditions they are in," said health department inspector Bob Wayne.

Wayne took Eyewitness News on a walking tour of the park, which included trash piles and sharp objects all over the place. Exposed electrical wires pose a threat to little kids, with little fingers, who like to poke and prod.

"There's so much to write here," Wayne said.

Wayne found so many violations, he couldn't write them all down.

Virginia Huber doesn't have a working air conditioner and has to dry her clothes on her car. The Disney employee said her complaints to park management are always ignored.

"You have to fight off the cockroaches. You tell them and they wont fix anything," she said.

The Health Department will give the manager 60 days to get it cleaned up, while the manager promised Eyewitness News it will be even sooner.

"Within two days it will be done," said park manager Sal Conigliaro. "You will see a big difference."

The Health Department said it will take longer than 48 hours to clean up the mess and was also calling in Code Enforcement to help.
