ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

Officials said an Orange County deputy was forced to open fire on an armed and suicidal woman Saturday afternoon.

Deputies responded to West Colonial Drive for a distraught and possibly suicidal woman shortly before 1:00 p.m. Officials said the woman was reportedly distraught because she had to put her dog down earlier in the day.

According to investigators, the woman was armed with a gun and pointed it at responding deputies. One deputy was in fear for his life and opened fire on the woman, officials said.

The woman barricaded herself in a business on the 6800 block of West Colonial Drive after the shots were fired. Investigators said the standoff has since ended and the woman was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Deputies said nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution.
