DeLand woman accused in hit-and-run commits suicide

DELAND, Fla. — Authorities said a DeLand woman, who was arrested in a hit-and-run crash that killed one teen and injured another, apparently committed suicide.

Volusia County Sheriff's deputies said they found 50-year-old Danielle Halverson dead in her bedroom Monday after a friend got worried when he couldn't reach her. He called the sheriff's office, reporting that Halverson had been depressed lately and had spoken of suicide.

Reports said Halverson left a suicide note.

She was arrested in October and charged with leaving the scene of a March 17 crash that killed 14-year-old Juliana Taylor Hobbs. She was also charged with tampering with evidence.

Records show she told deputies the crash might have happened when she reached for her cellphone.

Officials said an autopsy and toxicology tests will determine how she died.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
