Man shot, killed in Orange County apartment complex

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators said a man was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Sun Key apartments in Orange County Friday night.

According to deputies, the shooting happened just after 11:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Sun Key apartment complex, which is off of Goldenrod Road.

When deputies and emergency crews arrived, a 31-year-old man was found in a vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

Jake Williamson, a resident of the apartment complex told WFTV he heard the shooting.

"We were sitting here and we heard a pop like a firecracker, and heard a woman scream 'somebody help me'," Williamson said.

The victim's girlfriend told deputies they were waiting to meet a friend in the parking lot when two men confronted them, investigators said. According to deputies, the woman said one of the suspects shot her boyfriend before fleeing in a dark colored vehicle.

Deputies said the man's body was found in the driver's seat of an SUV in the parking lot.

"I didn't get too close but I saw the car doors open with the guy sitting there," Williamson said.

The victim has been identified as Jeffrey Carpenter, deputies said.

The two suspects are described as black males, one with light dreadlocks and the other possibly with short hair, according to investigators.

Deputies said they do not know a motive for the shooting and it remains under investigation.
