Early dismissal for Lake County schools going away for 5 weeks

Starting October 2, early dismissal is going away for Lake County students and teachers for five weeks to make up for time lost during Hurricane Hermine, when the schools were shut down.
The Lake County School Board points to Hurricane Hermine, saying they have no other option but to make up the time lost.
"So for five Wednesdays, schools will dismiss at their regular time instead of their early dismissal," said Sherri Owens of Lake County Schools.
Eyewitness News asked if the Lake County School Board considered using any of their built-in storm days.
"Did the board consider perspectives of both parents, as well as students, regarding this plan?” asked Channel 9 reporter Sarahbeth Ackerman.
"We did," Owens said. "The board did take a look at some of the feedback we got from parents, as well as employees, and all of that was taken into consideration when they came up with the plan."
Because two of the storm days landed on Lake County schools’ Thanksgiving break, they decided to spread out the makeup hours into five separate Wednesdays.
Owens said the board had no other option because the state requires them to meet a certain amount of instruction time. So it was either make up the days over five weeks or make it up on a holiday break.
"While it may not satisfy 100 percent of the people, we think it's the best plan given the choices," Owens said.
