Help us feed local families

Orlando,Fla. —

WFTV 9 Family Connection and 27 Community Connection have teamed up with Dr. Oz and the Second Harvest Food Bank to help families in our community.

One in five Central Floridians are hungry, including children. The Second Harvest Food Bank has numerous public food drives going on in our community now. You can help by donating non-perishable food items to help feed local families.

The Coalition for the Homeless is also need of canned vegetables specifically and is located at 639 W. Central Blvd. Orlando, FL 32801. You can also visit them online at http://www.centralfloridahomeless.org/

Is Hunger really a problem in Central Florida?
• Yes, last year we distributed more than 30 million pounds of grocery product, the equivalent of more than 20 million meals. Approximately 1 in 5 of our population—732,000 people—needed food assistance in Central Florida last year. This is a 152% increase from 2006.

Who is hungry in Central Florida?
47% of clients served are children.
20% of the households served have at least one member age 65 or older.
33% of households served have at least one working adult.

How does Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida serve the hungry?
Through a variety of programs including:
• Collection & Distribution of Food
• Food Stamp application assistance
• Childhood Hunger – Hi-Five Kids Pack, Kid’s Café
• Second Helpings – Prepared and Perishable Food
• Fresh Produce
• Disaster Relief

What area does Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida serve?
• We directly serve the Central Florida area including Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties.

How efficient is Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida?
• For every $1 donated, up to $9 worth of grocery product is provided to those in need.
96% of every dollar goes straight to feeding people.

Does Second Harvest Food Bank need volunteers?
• Yes, we rely on the generosity of thousands of volunteers each year. Last year over 8,000 volunteers contributed 31,000 hours of service.
