FedEx plane catches fire at Fort Lauderdale airport

A FedEx plane caught fire at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport late Friday.

The landing gear on FedEx Flight 910, a DC-10 aircraft, collapsed as the plane was arriving in Fort Lauderdale from Memphis International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The fire was out by about 6:15 p.m., according to a tweet from Mike Jachles, Broward County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The FAA tweeted that there is a ground stop in place at the airport. The plane came to a stop on the runway and is still blocking it.

Because of the ground stop, travelers can expect delays into and out of the airport. Check with your airline to see if your flight is affected.

FedEx released this statement Friday evening: "Our pilots are safe following an aircraft issue at the Fort Lauderdale airport. We are cooperating with authorities on the scene."

Earlier Friday, an American-Airlines plane taking off from Chicago-O'Hare airport to Miami aborted its departure after an "engine-related issue" caused the right side of the plane to burst into flames. American Airlines said eight people, including one flight attendant, sustained minor injuries in that incident.

The airport reopened at 7 p.m. Friday with all flights operating from the south runway. The north runway will remain closed until an investigation into the incident is complete, the airport said on Twitter.
