Lake County Health Department begins 6th grade immunization program at area schools

Lake County - The Lake County Health Department in collaboration with the Lake County School Board, will offer immunizations at the following schools for students who will enter 7th grade in the 2013/2014 school year:

Tavares Middle School                                   Thursday, March 21st
Eustis Middle School                                      Thursday, April 4th
Mt. Dora Middle                                               Tuesday, April 9th
Gray Middle School                                         Thursday, April 11th
Umatilla Middle                                                Tuesday, April 30th
Clermont Middle School                                  Thursday, May 2nd
Windy Hill Middle School                                 Tuesday, May 7th   
Carver Middle School                                      Thursday, May 16th
East Ridge Middle                                           Tuesday, May 21st
Oak Park Middle                                              Thursday, May 23rd 
Lifestream Academy (Leesburg)                    Friday, May 24th  
Lifestream Academy (Eustis)                         Tuesday, May 28th

The Lake County Health Department’s School Health team will provide the following required vaccinations:

·         Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
·         Hepatitis B (Hep B)
·         Polio
·         Measles, Mumps Rubella (MMR)
·         Varicella

Although not required, an additional vaccination, Meningococcal, is recommended for the prevention of bacterial meningitis, will also be offered.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following receive the Meningococcal Vaccine:

·         All children 11 – 18 years of age
·         Unvaccinated children at entry to high school (15 years of age)
·         All college freshman living in a dormitory

"The school-based immunization program is very convenient for parents since all parents have to do is review the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) forms, sign & return the permission form to their child's school.  Parents don't have to miss work for the purposes of getting their child vaccinated for the seventh grade immunization entry requirements.  It is just that simple so beat the summer rush and vaccinate now," states Genet Exalien, Nurse Program Specialist.

Parents of 6th graders will receive information and required documentation in the mail from the Lake County Health Department.  All vaccines are offered at no cost and parents are required to complete, sign and return all documentation to the school in order for their child to be vaccinated.
