1 injured, suspect in custody after Sanford officer-involved shooting

SANFORD, Fla. — A man was injured by gunfire while police were responding to reports of a suspicious person Friday night, police said.

Sanford police said they found an armed man near Airport and Americana boulevards and U.S. 17-92 at about 8 p.m. Friday and shots were fired.

The unidentified suspect wasn’t hit, but someone nearby was injured in the gunfire and taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s not known if the injured person was a bystander or was with the suspect.

Police said they have a suspect in custody and are no longer searching for anyone.

No details have been released on what led the officer to open fire.

“Right now, it’s in the initial stages and the investigation is now under way,” said Bianca Gillett of the Sanford Police Department.

Sanford police said on Twitter that drivers should expect traffic delays in the area and should take 27th Street to Sanford Avenue as an alternate route.

“It was kind of weird and confusing and scary, because you don’t know what happened to who or anything,” said witness Ryan Glass.

No other details have been released.
