2 Orlando men homeless after rent checks stolen

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Two Orlando men were left broke and homeless because they didn't realize the apartment they had just moved into had a pending eviction notice.

Ernie Cornish said he posted an ad on Craigslist in December looking for an apartment and moved in with Monica Street on Dec. 30.

Cornish said everything was fine until this week, when Street said they were moving to a new place after he and a third roommate had paid February rent.

"I came home and her truck was completely full with her stuff, including my $250 mountain bike," Cornish said.

The other roommate took pictures of Street's car filled with stuff before she left.

Cornish found out Street's phone was disconnected and started searching the apartment for answers and found out the rent on the home was more than $6,000 past due.

"I found a wallet in the dresser drawer that had all kinds of IDs from Iowa, Florida (and) Social Security cards," Cornish said.

Police said the wallet was reported stolen last week.

Police reports said Street was wanted for aggravated battery, criminal mischief and fraud for stealing credit card information at a past job. She's now wanted for grand theft, as well.

While Channel 9 was at the home, deputies arrived to follow up on the eviction notice and to make sure everyone was out of the house.

Cornish is looking for a new place to live.
