300-year-old tree struck by lightning in DeLand cut down

DELAND, Fla. — Crews in DeLand took down a big, historic tree that was struck by lightning in August.

Most of the branches of the 200-to-300-year-old tree hung over U.S. 17-92 in the median near the intersection of Dodge Avenue.

Lanes were closed as workers removed the tree.

A circumference section of the tree will be cut and given to the City of DeLand for historical purposes.
