64-year-old victim of Orange County hit-and-run dies

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 64-year-old man who was hit by a stolen car while riding a moped on Oct. 11 has died, the Florida Highway Patrol announced Wednesday.

Clarence Gordon “Duffy” Hadler had been listed in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center since the crash.

He died Tuesday night, an FHP spokeswoman said.

The crash was reported at 4:40 a.m. on Colonial Drive near Forsythe Road.

Hadler was making a U-turn from eastbound Colonial Drive to the westbound lanes when he was hit and run over by a white car, investigators said.

An unregistered car matching the description of the one involved in the crash was found but the owner told troopers it had been stolen.

Troopers said there was front-end damage on the car consistent with the shape of the moped, along with shattered glass in the corner of the windshield where the victim would have been struck.

“That Honda Accord never stopped. Left the scene. Left that moped rider (was) lying in the road, and that moped rider is still fighting for his life," FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said. "It's improper, it's immoral, everything you want to think about this, that people can leave somebody that has been injured on the side of the road to die and not even render help, not even call 911.”

No information was released on the identity of the car’s owner.

“It’s terrible that somebody hit him and left the scene. I have no idea why that was,” said Hadler’s friend, Ollie Mitchell.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call FHP at 407-737-2213.
