Carjacker sought after beating 77-year-old Orange County woman

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County sheriff's investigators are searching for a man they said injured a woman in a violent carjacking.

Charlesey Smedley is covered in cuts and bruises, and bearing the pain of three fractured ribs.

Smedley, 77, was carjacked outside of the Capri Apartments at Hunter's Creek early Monday morning.

Smedley said she pulled up to the gate just before 2 a.m. She said she had trouble with her gate code, and noticed a man get out of the car behind her and come up to her window.

"He said, 'I told you to get out.' He opened the door and pulled me out," said Smedley. "I fell underneath the key pad, and I fell on the curb and I think that is how I hurt the side of my face."

Smedley was able to walk to a neighbor's apartment to get help and call police.

"Who in the world would throw a 77-year-old on the concrete?" the neighbor asked.

Smedley was taken to Florida Hospital Kissimmee to be treated for her injuries.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office released a composite sketch of the man they said stole Smedley's 2003 Hyundai Accent.

Surveillance cameras captured an image of the vehicle just before that the carjacker drove away.

"We are going to do everything that we can to bring justice to this grandmother and her family," said Detective Jason Sams of the Sheriff's Office.

"I want them to find him," said Smedley.
