9th grade student arrested for bringing gun to school, Volusia County deputies say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A ninth grade student at DeLand High School was arrested Thursday morning for bringing a loaded gun to the school, investigators with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

The gun was found in Dominic Lewis', 15, backpack, deputies said.

School administrators said they became aware of the gun when Lewis became confrontation with a maintenance worker.

A teacher overheard Lewis telling another student he had $1,000 and something else in his backpack that might get him arrested, deputies said.

The teacher notified school administrators and Lewis was taken away.

"It was discovered the student in fact was in possession of the cash as well as a weapon. Both were found in his backpack."

The was a transcript of the call that the principal sent home to parents.

Lewis told deputies he stole the Glock 19, along with two magazines, and some money from his grandfather’s safe and planned to give the weapon to a friend.

The teen never made any threats to harm anyone with the gun, deputies said.

Lewis was charged with having a gun on school campus.
