Defense blames killings on suspect's diabetes, obesity

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A man accused of killing his wife and pregnant daughter's boyfriend in Osceola County appeared in court Tuesday while lying on a hospital bed.

Kevin Satterfield's daughter testified that he shot her, and killed her mother and her boyfriend.

Heather Satterfield, who was pregnant at the time of the shooting, came face-to-face with her father in court as she described what happened the night of April 30.

Heather Satterfield said her boyfriend, Christian Martinez, confronted her father as he was beating her mother, Vicky Satterfield, with a bed post.

She also stated that when her boyfriend told her to call 911, her father pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.

"Then what did your father do?" asked an attorney.

"He turned and shot me," said Heather Satterfield.

Heather Satterfield had an emergency C-section, and her baby survived.

After the killings, police said, Kevin Satterfield fled to Lousianna with thousands of dollars in cash and gift cards he had gathered in the days prior to the attack. Prosecutors said that shows premeditation.

During its opening statement, the defense admitted Satterfield shot his victims but said his diabetes and extreme obesity at the time caused him to lose control

Officials said Satterfield faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
