Alert issued for Lake Lawne in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — City officials have issued a lake alert for people to not go into Lake Lawne in Orange County or use irrigation from the lake.

There are possible elevated fecal coliform counts at the lake, which is located at the Central Florida Fairgrounds, city officials said Sunday.

The alert was issued after 800 gallons of sanitary waste discharged into Lake Lawne, city officials said.

City crews said they removed the blockage from the sanitary line and recovered 300 gallons of waste from the canal before it entered the lake.

Warning signs and door hangers have been placed on lakefront homes to warn people about the possible elevated fecal coliform levels.

City stormwater personnel will be taking bacteria samples within the lake to monitor the bacteria levels. Once fecal coliform counts meet acceptable State water quality standards, updates will be sent via email, to the City's Lake Alert website and Lake Alert Hotline phone number.
