Cops: Poacher arrested after being found with nearly 300 turtle eggs

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Nearly 300 sea turtle eggs were reburied after being found in the possession of a poacher, officials said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that it received a tip Friday of a man who appeared to be taking turtle eggs from a St. Lucie County beach.

Authorities said James Odel McGriff, 55, of Riviera Beach was arrested and found with a backpack full of eggs.

It's not known if McGriff has obtained an attorney.

In 2002, he was arrested after authorities said he sold turtle eggs to an undercover officer.
