NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A convicted sex offender who managed to escape from Volusia County deputies while he was handcuffed was caught and arrested late Wednesday night, authorities said.
Deputies said the incident started shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday when they took Luis Alberto Hernandez Dejesus into custody.

Dejesus, 31, is a convicted sex offender from north Florida who has been living in the New Smyrna Beach area, deputies said.
Authorities said a deputy found Dejesus in New Smyrna Beach and took him into custody for moving without notifying authorities of his new address, as required by law.

Investigators said he was pretending to live at the place he listed.
Officers said DeJesus was working at a New Smyrna Beach car dealership mowing lawns when he was confronted.

When DeJesus was confronted, he assaulted the deputy and fled into an area along the Indian River, into a swampy area.

DeJesus will appear before a judge Thursday on new charges, officers said.
