Police: Apopka man killed in random robbery

APOPKA, Fla. — Detectives said they are searching for clues after a 31-year-old man was killed in an apparent random robbery in Apopka late Friday night.

The victim was with his brother in his front yard on Hawthorne Avenue when an unknown suspect attempted to rob them, police said. Neighbors said there was a language barrier between the victims and suspect, which led to the 31-year-old being shot.

"We were in the kitchen getting something to eat and I heard 'Boom, boom!'... There was two gun shots," neighbor Rafael Laureano said.

The victim, Edy Vasquez Hernandez, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died, police said.

Several residents in the neighborhood were shocked to hear about the man's death, which investigators are calling a homicide.

"For something like this to happen - it's shocking. He's lived there two years," neighbor Sabrina Jones said.

Police said the crime appears to be random and they are working to release a suspect description.
