Apopka residents complain of water payment glitch on website

APOPKA, Fla. — Several Apopka residents said they had trouble paying their water bill after the city launched a new online payment site Tuesday.

A city representative said the payment website has been fixed.

But Sally Jones said when she tried to pay her water bill Tuesday morning, the site would not let her log in.

"There was just a message saying that it was down," Jones said.

The site also had other problems.

The city never told customers that old account numbers and PINs wouldn't work with the new system, residents said.

"Was it an oversight or just that the city didn't foresee that this would be a problem or cause confusion?" asked WFTV’s Mike Manzoni.

"We didn't foresee that it would actually be a big issue," said Sargent. "It was an unexpected hiccup."

Sargent said the city took so many calls on Tuesday that some customers couldn't get through.

"Certainly, advance notice certainly would have helped," he said.

Lenore Brantley said she paid her water bill early this month, but others were not so lucky.

"I think if they're going to make a change, they should let the customer know in advance," Brantley said.

Sargent said there's no need to worry about late fees due to Tuesday’s problems.

The city said it'll work with any customers who are worried about late bills.
