Appeal delays planned Doctor Phillips development, Trader Joe's

DOCTOR PHILLIPS, Fla. - It could be some time before a new Trader Joe's store planned for the Doctor Phillips area may be built.

A local lawyer appealed the application filed by the developer of the proposed Doctor Phillips Plaza on Sand Lake Road.

The appeal claims discrepancies between what the developer was planning to build and what was discussed in a county hearing in March.

Earlier this month, developer Chuck Whittall told Channel 9 he thinks the timing is right to start building. He said the latest plans he had presented removed 50 percent of the shopping space initially proposed.

"They said, 'We don't want a building against residential. We don't think it's a good transition,'" said Whittall. "What better transition than a park?"

After the appeal, Whittall pulled the application but is expected to re-apply at a later date.
